Buying a Used Truck from Halfway Around the World — Why Should They Trust You?

An Invisible Truck Is an Overseas Buyer’s Biggest Fear

Anyone in used truck exports has been there: the buyer is in Africa, the truck is in Liangshan, Shandong — half a planet apart. They decide whether to wire a deposit based on nothing but a few photos and a short video.

Here’s what makes this trade hard: customers are buying the one thing they’re most afraid of being tampered with. Accident trucks, flood-damaged trucks, rolled-back odometers — even domestic buyers bring a mechanic along. Imagine doing that from thousands of miles away. He can’t see inside the engine, can’t touch the frame to check for damage. All he has is your word: “The truck is fine.”

But over the years, a few sellers repainted refurbished trucks and sold them as premium units — and burned overseas buyers badly. Now African buyers have learned: you say it’s good, they don’t believe it; you send a video, they suspect it’s staged; you ask for a deposit, they stall you for three months. Once trust is gone, even a cheap truck won’t sell.

There’s Only One Way Out: Be Honest

The exporters closing deals these days don’t rely on smooth talk. They lay the truck’s real condition on the table — film it exactly as it is, no editing, no rolled-back mileage, state the true year and month. If the customer asks about the engine or the frame, shoot a video on the spot. If you don’t know the answer, say “Let me check and get back to you” — don’t bluff. Better to volunteer “this frame has been straightened” at the quote stage than let the customer find out after loading. When you talk straight, customers actually respect you more.

An African Customer Flew Straight to Liangshan

Not long ago, an African customer got tired of guessing through a screen — he flew all the way to Liangshan, Shandong. That day, row after row of shiny white HOWO tractors stood in the warehouse. He checked every truck from the front bumper to the tires, squatted down to inspect the frame welds, opened the cab and checked the interior — one by one. The salesperson followed him, filming whatever he asked; when he didn’t know an answer, he wrote it down and got back to him after checking.

The customer didn’t rush to place an order. He just said: “These look more solid than what I saw online.” A few days after he went back, the first order was confirmed.

When you’re willing to open the books on the truck’s real condition, the deal can actually move forward.
